You are the reason for the season
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” NIV
Christmas is always a special time. Shopping malls are full. Parking lots are congested. Streets are crowded. There’s old familiar music in the background and coloured lights everywhere. And families and friends gather together to celebrate the season, whatever they perceive it to be.
Despite the crass commercialization of the season, there’s something special, even magical, about Christmas. I think it brings out the kid in us all, a childlike faith, a hope that tomorrow will be better, that despite all the indifference around us, a greater love still abounds.
For followers of Christ, more than anything else, it’s a reminder of how God reached out to us. Yes, it took place 2000 years ago, and yet, it takes place every day too.
It was so breathtakingly awesome that even heaven could not contain the sheer audacity of what God was about to do. The glory of God filled the earth; angels burst through spiritual realms to sing God’s praises and reveal God’s purpose.
What was announced to Mary in secret, angels were now proclaiming to all the world. The Messiah – God with us – had come and will forever remain with us. Sin is forgiven, burdens are lifted, old things have passed away and new things have come.
In Christ, we have favour with God, we have been made acceptable to God, we have been brought into the household of God. In Christ, we are His great treasure, His great joy, the apple of His eye. He will go to any length to defend us, to bless us, to honour us, to draw us closer to Him. And nothing, ever again, can separate us from the love of God in Christ.
So you see, you are the reason for the season. Christmas is the story of how God came after you, how He found you and now rejoices over you!
I don’t know what your year has been like. You may have achieved breakthrough in some areas of your life, you may have suffered setback and failure. You may have had great moments of victory, you may have experienced disappointment.
Life doesn’t come with any guarantees except God’s assurance that through it all, Jesus – God with us – will be with you to cheer you on when you rise to the heights, to pick you up when you plunge to the depths, to give you strength to finish the race, fulfil your destiny, accomplish God’s purposes.
Rest in His love. Rejoice in His presence. Stand in awe that God loves you no matter what. Look with anticipation to the future, for the best is yet to come. And be determined that because He lives in you, you can live life to the fullest, pleasing God in every way.
Have a wonderful Christmas and an awesome New Year!
