The Shout of Faith
“Shout for the Lord has given you the city!” (Joshua 6:16)
The first walled city that the people of Israel faced when they crossed the Jordan River was the city of Jericho. It was a formidable city with high, impregnable walls around it. Assaulting and capturing the city would be a long and costly process. I’m sure many in the camp of Israel must have wondered how they were going to capture such a well-defended city. God was again pushing them up against impossible odds and stretching their faith.
God’s plan was simply: “Shout, for I have given you the city!” Could anything be more ridiculous? I can imagine the people shaking their heads in disbelief, thinking, “What madness is this? How can marching around a city, blowing trumpets and then shouting bring down walls that had withstood the assault of mighty armies?”
“Is this pushing faith too far? Wouldn’t it be better to simply attack the city directly? Or wouldn’t it be wiser to simply bypass Jericho?”
Imagine Joshua’s predicament. He had declared that after they had marched around the city for seven days, and then shouted as the priests blew the horn, the walls would come down. Each day as the army and the priests marched around the walls, I wonder if Joshua ever thought how foolish he would look among his own people, as well as the people of Jericho, if nothing happened? They would have laughed and ridiculed him. It would have surely been the end of his career.
But he had heard from God, and he was willing to lay everything on the line. Faith in God’s word always involves putting yourself in a vulnerable place, overcoming fear and doubt, stepping out in blind obedience.
But just imagine the surprise when the people of Israel blew the horn and gave the shout at Joshua’s command. Perhaps it might have gone something like this: A roar goes up from the Israelites. The dust settles; silence descends. The people of the city look on bemused, thinking, “Is that all they can do?” The Israelites watch, half-wondering whether it was not all a waste of time.
Then, suddenly, from within the walls, a low rumbling noise begins to rise. Sounds like an earthquake. The sturdy walls of Jericho begin to waver. A crack appears right down the side of the front wall facing the Israelites. A massive stone block shifts … and then, without warning, the walls begin to come crashing down!
Imagine the amazement on both sides – a shout of faith brought down the walls of a mighty city! How amazing is God that He would use the simple things to bring down that which is mighty.
Faith in God moves mountains. Faith in God brings down strongholds. Faith in God always prompts God to fulfill His promise. Faith overcomes fear and doubt. Faith is the answer!
Have you come up against a Jericho wall, an insurmountable problem in your life? Remember that the Lord uses a simple thing like faith in His word to shake mighty fortresses and bring them down. What the shout of faith accomplished for Joshua and the Israelites on the plains of Jericho, it will do for you today on the plains of trouble. Whatever comes your way, have faith in God and the Lord will give you victory. It really is as simple as that.
Let the shout of faith be in your heart today. Go forth secure in the knowledge that the God of faith is with you and your shout will surely bring victory.
