The Pernicious Influence
There is a pernicious influence spreading almost unnoticed, all over the world. It is in most of the things we read, the music we hear, the things we watch; it’s in the media, in entertainment, on the web. It sows doubt and unbelief; it seeks to separate man from God.
And it is spreading. Its effects are growing stronger and stronger. An evil foundation of apostasy is being laid for that time which Jesus warned us about – the time when the love for God will grow cold.
When Jesus said that men would become “lovers of themselves” [2 Tim 3:2], He was speaking of a time when we would become self-centered, intent on getting our own way, satisfying our own needs, feeding our own desires. That is the culture at the heart of modern society today. We have made ourselves ‘god’ – it’s all about us now – and we are intent on pleasing ourselves and worshipping ourselves.
But we are never satisfied, can never be satiated enough, so we fuel the consumerism of our age. It does not feed us, we feed it! We reject character, noble values, ethics, because they all limit us. Because of all this, we are what we own, what we enjoy doing.
There was a time when we defined ourselves by our faith, our job, our nationality but now all those things have been deemed too limiting. So we are defining ourselves by what we own. There is a mad rush to “own” the latest whatever. We see it in our kids – they have lost the ability to entertain themselves, to interact with others, to just hang out with others. They get distracted easily and are constantly bored. This is a nihilism that even Nietzsche could not have imagined.
But behind it all, and this is what modern philosophy and science cannot comprehend, is a spiritual force – evil incarnate – intent on capturing the hearts and minds of man and reducing it to nothing but a pale shadow of what God created him to be.
There is an intense and furious battle going on for the soul of every human being. Two kingdoms in conflict. With Christ, there is fellowship with God; with the Devil there is only worship of self premised upon nihilism – that in the end nothing really matters, nothing is worthwhile, that only nothingness awaits us.
Nevertheless, it will not be an irreligious time, for there will be an increase of religious fervour – for all kinds of gods, spirits and powers – but not fervour for God Himself.
The tidal wave of evil and apostasy is already upon us and even Christians are now in real danger. There is no more room for complacency or mediocrity of faith. Those who do not stand strong will not stand at all. Those who do not take their faith seriously will be overcome. The battle has already begun. And it is time for us to contend for our faith.
We have to make more time for prayer. We have to draw much, much closer to God that we have in the past. This is the hour of battle.
Even our churches have been lulled into a false sense of security. They are going on with business as usual. Preaching the same old messages. Doing the same old things. So long as there is a reasonable number of people in the pews, a reasonable amount of money coming in, a reasonable amount of activity, we are content.
But these things are all superficial and unless we learn to sink our roots deeper into God, unless we are able to impact culture and contend for the Gospel among the nations, we will not stand. And even if we somehow managed to survive, we will still lose our children to godlessness.
What God wants most of all in this hour is men and women who are prepared to make a commitment, to openly confess Christ, to openly live for Christ, to stand on the front lines, to stand in the gap for their families and churches and nations. We cannot be indifferent anymore.
Sound the alarm! Warn your brothers and sisters in the faith. Wake up to the pernicious influence that is all around us.
