Quit worrying, start trusting
Jesus took aim at a central human preoccupation: our constant concern about food, clothes, shelter and all the other things we need to live well and comfortably. He said that people all over the world were obsessed with these things. It dominated their thoughts. It drove them and consumed much of their waking hours. They defined their lives, and who they were, in terms of what they owned. So many are trapped on the treadmill of life for life, driven by their desire for bigger and better things.
“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?” (NLT).
So much worry and anxiety expended on things that do not endure.
And what does it all amount to in the end? For a brief moment in time, they might enjoy houses, cars, clothes, things, positions of power and influence but sooner or later they have to contend with eternity. What will it be like for those who neglect to invest in eternity?
Don’t be like that, Jesus said. Don’t waste the precious life that has been given to you in the mad rush to accumulate things and on worrying about what you eat or wear or live. Instead, get your priorities right – put God first in your life. Aim for true and lasting wealth by having a rich relationship with God and everything else will fall into place.
God Himself is the real treasure. Pursue God. Get close to Him. Walk in His ways and please Him and He will take care of your life. See how He takes care of the birds of the air and the flowers of the field. Look closely at them and you will be amazed at how well He takes care of every detail of their lives. Not one bird falls to the ground and dies without His knowledge. Not one flower fades without Him knowing. And if He would go to such lengths to care about birds and flowers, would He not go to even greater lengths for you whom He loves so much more than the birds and flowers?
Think about it: He loves you. He cares for you. He will never leave you not forsake you. Therefore, trust Him with your life. Look to Him and quit worrying. Besides, you know that your worrying has no power to change anything. It is an exercise in futility.
Put God first in your life and you will never go wrong. And then one day, when you leave this earth and go on to eternity, you will find that you have a great treasure there also.
