Lifesaver on board!
Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. NIV
It had been a hectic time. Jesus was on the move, preaching, teaching and healing. Desperate crowds followed him everywhere He went – the sick, the hurting, the lost, the oppressed. What a picture of suffering humanity! And He was their only hope. Repeatedly, the Bible says, Jesus healed all who were sick and in need of a touch from God. He never turned anyone away.
In the midst of all this activity, He pulled away from the crowds to be alone with His disciples. They got into a boat and headed out across the lake. He promptly fell asleep in one corner of the boat. As they crossed the lake, they ran into a furious storm. It was so bad that even experienced seafarers like Peter began to fear for his life. The disciples rushed to Jesus and pleaded with Him to save them. In Mark’s Gospel, it says they asked Jesus, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38). Jesus’ immediate response was, “you of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and stilled the storm.
“You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Jesus seemed astonished that His own disciples would grow fearful and afraid of a mere storm when He was right there with them. Did they not believe that He was the Son of God? Did they not understand His love and commitment to them? Did they not comprehend from all the awesome miracles that they witnessed that He was the very power of God? His expectation seemed to be that His disciples would believe in Him enough to know that they were absolutely safe and secure around Him.
In their moment of crisis, when they saw the wind and the waves, perhaps they forgot that they were with Jesus. They were so engrossed by the stormy sea that they lost sight of the fact that they were with someone who had absolute power over the wind and the waves. God’s lifesaver was on board! Even if He was asleep, even if He had said nothing, His mere presence was enough to keep them from going under.
There are those who right now are going through a very difficult time in their lives and I feel the Lord wanting to give them an assurance that He is with them. They may be buffeted and tossed about by the winds of adversity and things might look very bad but they need not be fearful and afraid because He is with them. God’s lifesaver is on board!
They will not go down. The waters will not overwhelm them. No matter what they are going through right now, it will be well with them because He is with them. It might seem like Jesus is asleep in the midst of their storm, it might seem that they are not hearing the voice of God when they need to hear it most, but He is with them. And He is saying to them right now, “do not be afraid; only believe!” There is no storm, no situation, no circumstance that can overwhelm those who are in Christ Jesus!
