Keep the law of the Lord
1 Chronicles 22:12-13
May the LORD give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the LORD your God. Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the LORD gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. NIV
David’s advice to his son Solomon: if you want to be successful, keep the law of the Lord and be strong and courageous.
David spoke from experience. He had been just a shepherd boy, the least in his family, when God sent Samuel to anoint him king of Israel. During his reign, the nation vanquished most of its enemies and enjoyed unparalleled prosperity. In many ways, Israel reached the apogee of its power and influence under the reign of King David and his son Solomon.
David was not perfect and his flaws are recorded in the Bible in all its ugliness. But through it all, he learned that the way to success was not through cleverness or craftiness but through obedience to the law of the Lord.
He faced many challenges in his lifetime and every step of the way he had to choose whether to obey God or to do things his own way. He discovered that when he obeyed God, blessing and success followed. When he did things his own way, much pain and sorrow followed. He did not always understand the way of the Lord or why the promises of God often took time before it came to pass but he learned that God was always faithful.
The more he yielded to God, the more successful he became. The more he walked in the ways of the Lord, the more he prospered. That was his experience with the Lord and that was what he wanted Solomon his son to understand.
David’s advice is still good for today. Bookstores are full of books on success. Some urge you to dress for success while others suggest you can negotiate your way to the top. Some say you need to develop certain winning ways, a positive mental outlook perhaps, while still others insist that mastery of certain manipulative techniques is absolutely essential if you want to be number one.
David discovered that the key to success was to have a right heart toward God. When our hearts are right before God, when our ways are yielded to Him, something supernatural begins to take place and great blessing is released. It may tarry sometimes but God will surely give success to those who honour His ways.
It is an iron law of the Kingdom.
God wants you to be blessed and successful in life. He wants to bless your families and your marriage. He wants to bless the work of your hands and your finances. He wants to make all grace abound towards you so that you, always being sufficient in all things, may abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8). His desire is that above all things you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers (3 John 2).
Obedience to God releases that blessing.
It takes courage and faith to choose the way of the Lord. The world may disdain the way of the Lord and mock your choices but when they see the success that the Lord bestows upon you because of your obedience to His ways, they will be drawn to the Lord.
And that, too, is His purpose, that through you the whole earth may come to know the goodness of the Lord.
