Is Christ Enough for You?
2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
One of the books that has really inspired me is “There is Always Enough” by Rolland and Heidi Baker [Sovereign Publishing, 2003]. Their words fell like rain upon my soul.
Here is what they had to say right at the very beginning of their book: “I always wanted to believe and live the Sermon on the Mount, but usually got told that it did not mean all that I had thought it meant, and that I needed to be practical. I would read the scriptures longingly, trying to imagine how wonderful it would be not to worry about anything, safe and secure in the presence of Jesus all the time. Miracles would be normal. Love would be natural. We could always give and never lose. We could be lied to, cheated and stolen from, and yet always come out ahead. We would never have to take advantage of anyone, or to have any motive but to bless other people. Rather than always making contingency plans in case Jesus didn’t do anything, we could count on Him continually. We, our lives, and all that we preach and provide would not be for sale, but would be given freely, just as we have received freely. Our hearts would be carefree in the love of our Father in heaven, who always knows what we need, and we could get on with the glorious business of seeking first His Kingdom and His righteousness. There would always be enough.”
And then they added that in time they came to realize that the worst possible fate would be to miss out on all that.
And so they set their heart to live with the knowledge that Jesus was always enough. With that kind of faith, they cried out to God to send them to the poorest, the most impossible places on the earth, the places where there was no hope because they wanted “to see the gospel tested and proven where nothing else would work.” And God gave them the desire of their heart, opening doors for them to minister in different parts of Africa. Their life’s ministry became a testimony that “Jesus was always enough!” Whatever their situation, whatever their circumstance, whatever the danger they faced, whatever their need – Jesus proved Himself more than enough! Their book is a must read for every Christian.
And here’s something else they said that touched my heart. Talking about Jesus, they wrote: “He loves to show His heart. He loves to take the things which are not, and use them to nullify the things that are. He does not rest until He reaches the utterly lost and lonely. He overturns the worst that Satan can do, and glorifies Himself.”
I cannot help thinking that that is how we are meant to live as Christians. If Jesus truly is God, then surely He must be more than enough for us in every circumstance and situation, no matter how bleak, no matter how hopeless. He must be more than enough in our everyday circumstances and more than enough when the winds of adversity and trial blow hard. He must be more than enough to satisfy our heart’s longings and desires. He must be more than enough that we can live free of anxiety and worry. And He must be more than enough for us to live the life of service that God called us to.
How do we begin to live such an awesome life in Christ Jesus? The Spirit says to begin by trusting Jesus, by learning to surrender, and keep surrendering, everything – our hopes, our dreams, our cares and burdens – to Jesus and to start looking to Him for everything. And in everything to hold fast to the knowledge that Jesus is more than enough for us. Rolland and Heidi proved it and so can each one of us.
I pray that the Holy Spirit will stir your heart and transform your whole life today with the revelation that Jesus is more than enough for you.
