If you have faith
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” NIV
If you have faith,” Jesus said, “nothing shall be impossible for you.” What an incredible statement! He put no limit to what we could achieve, or expect from God, if we have faith in Him. And throughout history, men and women of faith proved this great truth. In the 11th chapter of Hebrews, it says that through faith, they “conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; [they] shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; [their] weakness was turned to strength; and [they] became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies” (Hebrews 11:33-34).
But how much faith do we need to accomplish all this? There is a tendency to think that surely very great faith is required and that surely only very few attain to such faith. But no, Jesus debunked that myth once and for all: He said we only needed faith as small as a mustard seed to move a mountain! A mustard seed? Do you know how small that is? It is only slightly bigger than the stop mark at the end of this sentence.
So what’s the message? I believe Jesus was saying to them that if they had faith to believe that He was the Messiah, they already had all the faith they needed to face every challenge, to move every mountain, to work miracles, to overcome impossible odds, to take hold of that which seems unreachable. When they asked Him to teach them how to increase their faith, He did not give them a long sermon on faith; He just told them that a little faith goes a long way. I believe He was saying to them that if they only acted in faith, with the faith they already had, nothing would be impossible to them. Instead of trying to grow their faith, they just needed to put it to work.
It is the same message that God gave to Moses (“What is that in your hand?” – Exodus 4:2), to Gideon (“Go in the strength you have….” – Judges 6:14) and to many others. In other words, put what you have to work and God will do the rest.
Faith is the currency of the Kingdom and the Father wants all His children to live by faith. Romans 1:17 declares that “the righteous [i.e. those made right with God] will live by faith.”
Jesus deliberately kept it simple and small, so that every believer would have access to it and be able to use it to the glory of God. Mustard seed faith. Such a small thing and yet, so often, that is all that stands between victory and defeat, between overcoming and being overcome, between advancing and falling back.
Is there a mountain in your life that needs to be removed? Are you facing a difficult challenge? Are you being confronted by an impossible situation? You know what? God wants to add your name to that 11th chapter of Hebrews and all it takes is that mustard seed faith that is already within you. You are more than a conqueror already! Rise up! Step out! Take that step of faith! And God will do the rest. Faith never fails because our God never fails!
