You’re the son of a king!
The 1994 hit musical, The Lion King, tells the story of Simba, a lion cub, who got into all sorts of trouble. Simba’s foolishness eventually resulted in his father having to lay down his own life to save Simba. Guilty and ashamed, Simba turns his back on his destiny and runs away, disgrace and defeat written all over his face. Too many mistakes had been made. He was a failure and his life was all but over for him.
Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the desert. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.” NIV
Then one day, his father appears to him in a vision and begins to remind him of who he truly is. I will never forget how their conservation ended: his father looks into Simba’s sad eyes and says, “Simba, don’t ever forget you’re the son of a king!”
I thought about that when I was reflecting on how we sometimes make mistakes, sin big time, make such a mess of things that we feel ashamed and defeated. All we can see are our own failures, our mistakes, the missed opportunities, the lost years. And we wonder whether it is over for us too, whether God can ever forgive us, whether we can ever make up for lost time, whether we are destined for second best in life.
You know, I believe that God is always looking at us and saying, “My son, remember, you’re the son of a King!” It doesn’t matter what you’ve done or how many mistakes you’ve made or how many opportunities you’ve squandered; nothing can change the fact that you are still the son of a king. It is not what you have may done, or not done, but what Christ has done in you, what you became in Christ when you were born again. You’re the son or a daughter of a king now and nothing can change that!
Our Father in heaven will never disown you or stop treating you as His son or daughter. He’ll never take His love away from you. He’ll never withdraw His favor from you. He’ll never stop believing in you. He’ll never stop working all things for your good. And if plan A doesn’t work, He’ll find another way to bless you and help you take hold of His best for your life.
So wherever you are, whatever you’ve done or not done, no matter how bad you’ve messed up, now matter how late in the day it is, just remember that you’re the son or daughter of a king!
See yourself as He sees you! Rise up, throw off the failure and defeat, lift your head up high and move forward again. Take hold of God’s plan and purpose for your life. Avail yourself of His grace and mercy and press on to win the prize. You’re a son or daughter of Almighty God, El Shaddai, the Great I am, and you have a destiny to take hold of!
